Most Successful NFL Franchise

Using the same methodology I used with the coaches article I have the following franchises listed as the most successful in the NFL since their inception.

team titles pts
packers 12 146
cowboys 5 140
steelers 5 140
49ers 5 140
giants 7 121
redskins 5 104
patriots 3 95
raiders 3 84
browns 8 83
bears 9 82
colts 4 82
broncos 2 60
rams 3 53
dolphins 2 52
lions 4 45
eagles 3 33
bucs 1 32
ravens 1 31
jets 1 26
chiefs 2 18
titans 2 16
bills 2 16
cardinals 2 10
chargers 1 8

If you agree with this chart, which basically surmizes that winning a championship in a league with 32 teams is more difficult than in one with ten, then the Steelers have an opportunity to become the most successful NFL franchise ever with a win in the SuperBowl.

How Good was Tony Dungy?

In my estimation coaches are measured by only one thing, wins. While Dungy is by all accounts a nice guy he is is a very good but not great coach. In my estimation, only coaches who have won multiple Championships/Super Bowl titles deserve to be called great. I took all the coaches who won multiple titles and looked to see how many teams were in the league each year in which they won and totaled it up. For example a championship in a 10 team league was worth 10 points, a 30 team league 30 and so on.... Here is the list of the top 15....
  1. Chuck Noll, 4 titles, 193 w's, 108 pts
  2. Bill Belichick, 3 titles, 138 wins, 95 pts
  3. Vince Lombardi, 5 titles, 96 w, 91 pts
  4. Joe Gibbs, 3 titles, 154 w, 84 pts
  5. George Halas, 6, 318, 75 pts
  6. Guy Chamberlin, 4, 58, 70 pts
  7. Don Shula, 2, 328, 68 pts
  8. Curly Lambeau, 6, 226, 63 pts
  9. Mike Shannahan, 2, 146, 60 pts
  10. Paul Brown, 7, 213, 59 pts
  11. Bill Parcells, 2, 172, 56 pts
  12. Tom Flores, 2, 97, 56 pts
  13. George Siefert, 2, 114, 56 pts
  14. Jimmy Johnson, 2, 80, 56 pts
  15. Tom Landry, 2, 250, 54 pts
This list is somewhat biased towards more recent teams, but in my estimation it is harder to win a title in a 28+ team league than in a ten team one.

What is surprising is that so little attention has been paid to the firing of Mike Shannahan who is in the top 10. The most similar coach to Dungy (139-69, 9-10 playoffs, 1 Super Bowl) has been Bill Cower (149-90-1, 12-9, 1 Super Bowl).
